GIRLS ON FILM - fun feminist film show

Girls On Film: a podcast launched to answer an urgent need to amplify female voices in film.

Hosted by Anna Smith - film critic, broadcaster and Chair of the London Film Critics' Circle - it brings female film critics together with actors, filmmakers and activists to give a fresh perspective on gender in the movies.

The support from the industry has been equally enthusiastic. After being named 'Best Feminist Film Podcast' by Stylist magazine in Feb 2019, Girls On Film was endorsed by EON's Barbara Broccoli, who said: 'More than 50 per cent of movie goers in the UK are female but nearly 80 per cent of critics are male, which is why you must listen to Girls On Film, a terrific new podcast hosted by Anna Smith with guest critics discussing the very latest film releases from the female perspective'.

In 2019 the pod was featured in The Guardian and on Radio 4, Sky News, and BBC Breakfast, and was picked as one of the top four film podcasts in the world by inews. In 2020, the podcast has been picked up by the British Film Institute who are hosting visual Girls On Film shows on their YouTube channel.

From celebrities to students, many listeners have said that the podcast has changed the way they think about film.

The response was BIIIIG!

The overwhelmingly positive response was immediate. By episode 3, Carey Mulligan had asked to guest on the pod, and was soon followed by Andrea Riseborough, Brie Larson (below), Amma Asante, Maxine Peake and more.

Anna Smith is one of the UK’s leading film critics. She features regularly on BBC News, Sky News, and BBC Radio, and in outlets such as Time Out, Metro, The Guardian, Sight & Sound, Empire and more. She has hosted Q&As with film stars and directors in cinemas all over the UK.
